Pixelfed works better than I expected for art - I can make a gallery with folders, and also follow it from here (or from Mastodon).

There are still issues with trying to discover amateur artists on the fediverse, but most of it is intrinsic to a platform without (DA-style) algorithms or (FA-style) required metadata, and none of it is Pixelfed's fault.
